Does anyone know of any good distant learning HCI under graduate courses?

Thanks,

Matt

Being an IxD educator myself, I have some strong doubts about distance learning courses in the design field. The more analytical types of knowledge you need to acquire in science, engineering, and humanities are much better suited to distance learning than the more iterative, practice-based synthesis skills you need as a designer. Hence it very much depends on the direction you'd like your education to take, if distance learning is a sensible option at all. If you'd rather take the usability/ergonomics route: ok. But if you'd like to become a designer, I'd strongly recommend against it. – Sascha Brossmann Mar 25 at 22:47

Hi Matt

A couple of people in my team have been doing some OU modules (http://open.ac.uk). Try searching for "User Interface Design". I'm not sure if it's everybody's cup of tea, but worth looking in to.

I've not done the OU stuff myself - but I've heard people say nice things about them. Definitely worth a look. – adrianh Oct 16 at 10:57
I'm going to be starting the OU course on Interaction Design in February. I spoke to two people who took the course before taking it. Both said that it's fairly dry and heavy on theory, but worth taking if you're looking for a good foundation in the ideas behind interaction design. – Jeff Van Campen Jan 12 at 22:04

There is the Iowa State University online course

http://www.hci.iastate.edu/Academics/msonline.php

And the DePaul University see

Both of these differ in that they are not modules but full masters.

Human Factors International offers a course to become a Certified Usability Analyst.

Although its not distance learning, you could do a ten day intensive or could do the 4 individual courses over a 2 year period - only thing is though, its quite expensive

Not really that expensive for what you get out of it. – Charles Boyung Mar 17 at 0:12
I agree, ideally your company could pay some towards it – Oliver Gitsham Mar 17 at 16:00

The online HCI program at Iowa State is excellent. Highly recommended to those seeking distance education.

If you are on LinkedIn, there has been a recent discussion on this topic in the IxDA group.

Has anyone ever gone through the online program at RIT? Just curious...
